The Autobiography of Gertrude Stein (eBook by Plain Editions)
The Autobiography of Gertrude Stein: Stories.
Washington, DC: Plain Editions, 2011.
A century ago Gertrude Stein announced that "there are no more stories."
Since then quite a few have been written. But her point was well taken:
plot and its sequence of linked actions deform the shape of life. "The
Autobiography of Gertrude Stein" straddles the line between shaping life
into plot, and evoking its other structures: fragments, evocative
moments, and scenes that coalesce into something like meaning. Some
stories in the collection named after one of its stories are
avant-garde, based on structures other than plot; some are more
traditional. All are about the way we interact with, form, and come to
understand our world. Stein would have understood.
